Confluencer
Released May 27, 2022
Transplanted to Dawson City in Canada’s north, Sophie Noel (aka Magnolia) is a folk-jazz singer-songwriter. She has been playing for as long as she can remember, singing in three-generational harmony around the house with her mother and grandmother, and brings her lifetime of playing to a sound that blends contemporary folk with influences of old jazz and classic country.
Whether or not you’ve had the joy of experiencing Magnolia’s music before, you will quickly find yourself drawn into the comfortable confidence of her performance. Her songs are timeless, fresh, and centered around her easy vocals. Sophie’s music is haunting and joyful; a collection of harmonies and lyrics that feel both familiar and strange, but nonetheless convey strong and contagious emotion.
Her EP, Confluencer, brings together saxophone, guitar, strings, and electronic sounds that makes a unique atmosphere in a genre all its own. It comes on the heels of her 2019 release of Sisterly, and builds on the foundation created by that debut EP. Her roots in old Americana and traditional jazz are ever-present throughout both recordings and performances. You can feel it in the unexpected complexity of her songwriting and the vocal harmonies that define Sophie’s exceptional style.
