Hillsburn doubled down on their independent ethos for their second album, The Wilder Beyond, producing it collectively and recording it in singer Paul Aarntzen’s Halifax apartment. The group’s soaring three-part harmonies are intact here, but the densely-layered arrangements signal a move away from their folk roots and solidly in the direction of indie rock. Taken as a whole, it’s a bold statement: The Wilder Beyond is the sound of an award-winning young band hitting its stride.
